Submission of the WUL Application Summary Report
The final WUL Application Summary Report for the proposed Southern Boundary Run-off and Seepage, Gas Production West Project at Secunda Operations (SO), Mpumalanga has been submitted on Friday, 19 June 2026 to the Competent Authority – the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).

Sasol South Africa Limited (Sasol) at their SO plant, near Secunda, Govan Mbeki Local Municipality in Mpumalanga is undertaking a WUL application for the proposed Sasol Secunda Boundary Run-off and Seepage, Gas Production West project. The intent of this project is to reduce the potential for contaminated run-off, process effluent (spillages, wash activities, pipeline failures, etc.), or seepage originating from Area 3 (Coal Storage Pad) and Area 4 (Sump and associated infrastructure) to impact on water resources.
The Southern Boundary Run-off and Seepage, Gas Production West project’s water use activities require a WUL in accordance with the water uses as described in Section 21 of the National Water Act (NWA), Act 36 of 1998 (as amended). The following activities have been applied for from the Competent Authority, the DWS:

| Section 21 (c): Impeding or diverting the flow of water in a watercourse | The proposed upgrades to Area 3 and 4 may impact positively on the water quality of the adjacent watercourse due to the diversion of contaminated water away from the watercourse and decrease in the flow of contaminated water to the watercourse.
A GN 704 evaluation has been undertaken for the proposed project. |
